This collection was developed primarily as a teaching tool and secondarily as an archive. The folkloric data was collected between 1958 and 1977 by students enrolled in Anthropology 309: American Folk Music; Anthropology 311: Introduction to Folklore; and various senior seminars at San Fernando Valley State College (renamed California State University, Northridge). No standard formula for data presentation was required. The archive's classification system emerged out of the submitted data and was therefore continually reworked. The basic classification scheme reflects three principles: age of informant, national origin or cultural group, and genre of information given. Students were required to provide the names and biographical information of the informants, data and collecting contexts, a description of the collecting method, any explanatory information provided by the informants, and an analysis of the information gained. The collection is a reflection of its time and place, characterized by the 20th century immigrant population who worked within the citrus industry of the San Fernando Valley. The vernacular of the archive have been left intact; including the colloquialisms used at the time that includes outdated and insensitive terms in order to retain a valid historical perspective. Regionalism is also reflected in the traditions within ethnic communities between the "old country" and the "new."
